The Gila trout (Oncorhynchus gilae) is one of North America’s rarest trout. The historical range of Gila trout was limited to the Gila River and possibly nearby river systems in New Mexico and Arizona.
Facing possible extinction, in 1967 the species was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. After decades of restoration work, the status of Gila trout was upgraded to threatened in 2006.
