Lake sturgeon are found in large rivers and lake systems of North America, including the Mississippi River, Hudson Bay and Great Lakes.
Lake sturgeon can grow to be more than six feet long and weigh over 100 pounds. Females can live more than 100 years.
Lake sturgeon have a oddly shaped mouth on the bottom side of the head with 4 barbels in front of the mouth. Adults are olive-brown or gray with white undersides.
Lake sturgeon have 5 rows of bony plates which more distinguishable in younger fish. Their single dorsal fin is located far back near the caudal fin. The upper lobe of the tail is much larger than the rounded lower lobe.
