The Arctic charr is a member of the Salmonidae family which includes salmon and trout. The species is found farther north than other freshwater fish.
Arctic charr populations are found in lakes and coastal waters of North American and elsewhere throughout the northern hemisphere. The only native charr populations in the continental United States occur in a few ponds in northern Maine.
Its common name is sometimes spelled “char”. Other names for this beautiful fish include iqaluk and tariungmiutaq.
Arctic charr is highly prized for its excellent flavor, color and high Omega 3 oil content.
