In July, a new Indiana size record for spotted gar was set by a 13 year old angler. Jaxton Orr landed the record-setting gar with rod and reel using cut baits on Big Lake in Noble County.
Orr’s fish weighed 6 pounds and measured 34.7 inches long with a girth measurement of 11 3/8 inches. DNR fisheries biologist Jed Pearson verified the record.
Indiana state fish records are determined by weight. The old record for spotted gar was 5.1 pounds, caught from Turtle Creek Reservoir in Sullivan County in 2014 by Dale Haas.
